Threads are the treatment people ask me about with completely the wrong picture in their head. They have seen a "thread lift" on the internet, and they arrive expecting me to pull their jawline back with a piece of string. That is not what I do, and it is worth explaining what I do instead, because the real thing is more useful than the version on the internet.
PDO, polydioxanone, is a dissolvable material that has been used in surgical sutures for decades. There are two broad families. Barbed threads have little hooks along them, and they grab tissue and reposition it. That is the thread lift. It is a more invasive procedure and it is not something I offer.
The ones I place are Smuth threads. No barbs, nothing to grab with. I lay them under the skin in a lattice, and over the following months they dissolve completely while your own body builds collagen along every line they left behind. The thread is gone. The collagen is the point.
Support and skin quality rather than lift. The tissue holds itself a little better, the texture improves, and fine etched lines soften because there is something rebuilt underneath them. It is gradual. Nothing looks different that afternoon, and by month two or three it does.
Notice what is not on that list: I am not doing lower-face lifts with threads. If what is bothering you is genuine sagging, threads are not the honest answer and I will tell you so in the consult rather than take your money.
Expect a few days of tenderness, maybe some mild bruising, and for the first two weeks skip dramatic facial expressions and dental work. Strenuous exercise waits too. The threads absorb over about four to six months and the collagen they leave carries on after that, so a lot of my clients settle into treating once or twice a year.
Threads demand real placement skill and a candid conversation about whether you are a candidate, so a lot of practices skip them entirely. Years of needle work in anesthesia, before I ever moved into aesthetics, is exactly the background this treatment rewards.
